A source Auditorium - Long Darui: on Chinese Study in America over the Past Three Decades

At 4:00 pm, 27th, May, 2015, a postgraduate Lecture of a source series Lecture - Long Darui: lecture on Chinese Study in America over the Past Three Decades was held at Xipu campus X8215. This lecture was sponsored by the Postgraduate School, and undertook by School of Arts and Communication. Professor Wang Qiming chaired this lecture.

The lecturer, Professor Long Darui, was a visiting scholar of Department of Asian of University of California-Berkeley and University of the West (postdoctoral studies). Now, he is a professor of Chinese religious and history in University of the West inLos Angeles. Once he was an Assistant Dean and an Acting Head of the Faculty of Humanities. The main direction of his study was the Chinese Ming Dynasty Buddhist Tripitaka versions research, modern history of Chinese Buddhism, history and foreign relations.

At the beginning, professor Long Darui started this lecture with introduction of the older generation of major scholars Zhao Yuanren, Li Fanggui and American scholar Nicholas Bodman, Hugh Stimson. His talk included following thirteen aspects: grammar, phonology, word formation, syntax, sociolinguistics, lexicography, dialect, grammar (written), etymology and semantics, computational linguistics, psychological linguistics. Professor Long Darui focused on the introduction of achievements in linguistics of Wang Shiyuan, Luo Jierui, Robert •Ramsey, Zhou Youguang, Mei Zulin, Karlgren, Bai Yiping, Pulleyblank, Duan Musan, Feng Shengli and other linguists. During the lecture, Professor Long reminded students to take full advantage of database in the learning process, and stressed the importance of mastering at least one foreign language in learning linguistic research, especially comparative linguistic study. After this lecture, Professor Long patiently answered the students’ questions.
